jeju furey 2014 Summer money drops

11/12/2014

As we draw an end to summer of 2014 , Jeju Furey would like to give an update on the money that went to the Furey families during the summer of 2014.

                                                               Hamdeok family

On August 4, Furey former acting president Mary Summers was accompanied by new acting president Yolandi Rademeyer, translator Yumi Kang, and Furey representative Sean Ferguson on a visit to the newly-adopted Hamdeok family.   The family became an official Furey family in February of this year because of their financial needs.

During the visit, the mother gave the Furey crew an update of the family’s life over the past 6 months.  Although she said her health has improved since February (she had been suffering from some joint pain), the mother has been having tooth problems and would be undergoing dental work in the near future.  Luckily, she was able to apply for and was granted financial aid for the dental work from a multi-cultural support group.  Overall, the mother said, she has been feeling better – even going out on walks and getting more exercise.  She feels that ever since her stroke of good fortune that Furey brought her,  things have been getting better.

Unfortunately, when asked about the current state of debt, the mother informed the Furey representatives that her father, who resided in Japan, had recently passed away.  For family reasons, the mother and oldest son were making plans to try to visit Japan this coming winter to finalize her father’s estate.   While she is excited to get to see her family for the first time in many years, the financial burden of the trip along with the emotional distress of the situation darken the mood of her trip.  Additionally, the recent typhoons have posed problems for the house due to the large, and damaged, window and door area that makes the majority of the front of the house.  The mother has applied through a government program for a lottery that would allow them to move to a different, and hopefully better, home but is still waiting for the results.

When asked about the well-being of her children, as usual the mother had the highest of hopes for things to go well for them.  The oldest child, her daughter, is still working part time with the dream of one day returning to university when finances allow.  The older of the sons, a recent high school graduate, is hoping to be able to attend university in the upcoming school year, while the younger son, in middle school, continues to struggle with his studies.  Despite the hardships, the mother continuously believes that all of her children will be able to attend university and do well in their studies.

When the Furey team told the mother that they were there for more than just a check-in visit, that in fact they had brought her money that the whole Furey community had helped raise over the past 6 months, the mother’s eyes filled with tears.   Furey representative Ferguson had the honor of giving her the 2.8million won from the Furey Foundation.  While he tried to hand it over to her, the mother just kept saying, “Is it real?  Can I really have this?  I can’t believe it.”  Her gratitude showed through her lack of words and the tears she fought back.   She expressed to the Furey team how grateful she felt, but also how undeserving she felt herself to be because even though her family struggles, she knows there are others in the world that are worse.  Every night, the mother said, she tells her children that they must remember Furey and how blessed they were that such a wonderful group of people were helping them.

The emotions were present in both the mother and the Furey team.  When asked about his experience, Ferguson said, “I could feel how sincerely grateful she was and how important this money we raise is for her family. Visiting her made me wish we could do more without watering down what we already do.”

The meeting ended with handshakes and hugs all around and a promise from the Furey team to visit again soon.

                                                             Nohyeong Family

Former acting president Mary Summers and Furey translator Jihyon (Sofia) Kim visited the Nohyeong Furey family on Saturday August 9, 2014 to check in on how they’ve been doing and to deliver to them the funds that the Furey Foundation has raised over the past 7 months.  The Furey team was pleased to learn that the Nohyeong family was approved for a move to the Hwabuk area to a better-equipped living arrangement through the government lottery system.  The new apartment has a lower rent rate; however, the deposit for the new apartment was quite high and the family sought out aid from the Nohyeong church, whose members worked to raise money for the family to carry out their move.  Although they are no longer under the care of the Nohyeong Catholic Church, they will be receiving help and support from the Hwabuk Catholic Church and will remain a Furey family.

Compared to January, the father looked much healthier and stronger. The father said in general that his health has been, despite still struggling with weight-gain which is needed to help strengthen his back, the source of his physical ailments.  Doctors encourage him to eat healthy foods in large amounts to gain ‘healthy’ weight, but the family’s limited income makes it difficult for him to eat a large enough amount of meats, fruits, and vegetables to gain weight.   He hopes to find ways to eat healthy and gain weight and possibly be able to get access to a Chinese medicinal supplement that aids in weight gain.

The son, in high school, has remained at his current school and is doing well.  In January he was given a gift from Just Play board games for a free month of board-game play.  He has not yet been able to use the gift, but hopes to in the near future.  He said that everything is good for him, in his usual shy way.

The family received 2.8million won from Jeju Furey to which the father said he was “without words to express his thanks”  to Jeju Furey and all of those involved who help raise money to support him and his family.

                                                            Iho Family

In August 2014, Jeju Furey’s acting president ,Yolandi Rademeyer ,was accompanied by Furey representative Wanjin Reed and the pastor from a church in Noyoung. They visited the Iho family at home where they met the grandmother. Her 40 year old disabled son is living with her ,as well as his son/her grandson who is in third grade middle school.  Her grandson was not at home as he was still at school.

The grandmother has been doing well and she has been really good with her money, so much that on the previous visit she did not need the money that Jeju Furey had for her.

On this visit however she accepted the money(2,800,000won) with much gratitude and told them that she is still be saving her money and that she is working from time to time on the farms to bring in extra money. It would seem from the conversation that came up that the government supplies her and her family with \300 000 a month. She has also received a money donation from the local church for which she is really grateful.

On the last visit she had told Furey that she needed to re-wallpaper their house. On this visit she reported that they were able to re-wallpaper as well as put in a new boiler and there were currently no problems.

She is sick from time to time and she did report that her health is not too good.

She was accepting and welcoming to Furey’s representatives. She made an effort to mention how much the money means to her and her family and she will be in contact if she needs any help in any other way.

Furey will be going around to see her and her family in the winter…

BVB12 Beach Volleyball
BVB12 비치발리볼

On 11th and 12th of October 2014, Jeju Furey hosted its very first Beach Volleyball in typhoon weather! It was a windy day that lead to 34 teams trying their best to get the ball over the net! Good work to those teams who did not give up and still had fun although it was not usual volleyball weather!

As we had 34 teams, this has once again broken a new record for our fall tournament.

The weekend was filled with new challenges due to the unpredictable weather but we still managed to raise just over 3,000,000 won profit that will be going to the local Jeju families. Thank you to each and every person who participated in some way.

Well done to our :

In June, Jeju Furey hosted its 4th Badminton tournament.  With a record-breaking 30 registered teams (equaling 60 players), Badminton 4 was also Jeju Furey’s first two-location tournament.  On June 20th, the 30 teams divided to compete in a round-robin competition at Sarabong Park and Shinsan Park.  A week later, on June 27th, all teams convened at the Sarabong courts to battle it out in the bracket rounds.  After hours of grueling play, congratulations goes out to our winners of the A-Bracket: Shuttlefox (Elle Lucademo and Will Jenkins), B-Bracket: Jincan (김지나and Duncan Elder), and C-Bracket: Super 짱짱Minton(Jessica Zafra and Sean Jenkins).

A special thank-you to our volunteers Nailah Rivers and Emily Baker for all of their help during the tournament and Elle Lucademo for her generous help prior to and during the tourney.  Thank you to Sofia (김지현) for her delicious food and to our other sponsors of Bagdad Café, Jeju Kayaking Adventures, Burger Trip, Island Stone, and The Cheese Café for their donations and support.

Prosthetic legs, a rubber chicken, and Jeju Furey.

On March 22nd Indie Bar was host to Furey’s Improv2. Three comedic teams (12 performers) and 49 audience members took part in a great night of on-the-spot comedy. Three troupes performed in skits from Scenes from a Box, Who’s Line Is It Anyway? and Theatre Sports. This time around we were treated to the musical talents of Steve Mercier who played guitar to some off-the-cuff hoe-downs and other various singing escapades. Dining on a feast full of laughs and comradely, everyone left that night with belly full of good spirits.

A special thanks to Katie Burger and Eric Sweet for helping at the door, and Zero at Indie Bar for being such an awesome host.  A great round of applause for our coordinators, Shannon Warren and Yolandi Rademeyer, the performers, the audience members that became performers, and for everyone who made Improv2 such a great night.  Together we raised 305,000krw for the Furey Families!  Take a bow, everyone!

The rain didn't stop these competitors!  On Saturday, March 1, five teams consisting of 20 competitors met in the morning to receive their list of PhotoHunt challenges.  From getting a stranger's autograph, to playing in an "Air Band", to capturing a picture of Jeju's provincial bird, the PhotoHunt challenges were no easy feat to complete.

After a full day of roaming the city, the competitors, a little soggy from the rain, reconvened at The BAR in Shi-cheong for picture turn-in, dinner, sharing their battle stories, and the judging of the pictures.  After a lot of laughs and tallying the points, Team PEACOCK became Jeju Furey's PhotoHunt2 champion.  Congratulations to James Budd, Danielle LaBossiere, Jonathan Masters, and 박소맆!  Another congratulations to team Not So Scandalous for being the winner in points awarded from the other teams - a statement of their creativity!

Together the teams battled the weather and helped raise 139,000krw for the three Furey families.

Thank you to our sponsors for this event:
The BAR, Jeju Weekly, Nanta Theater, the JDC, and Dangchan Lab!  We couldn't have done it without your support.

Welcome Hamdeok Family! February 20, 2014

After long discussions with each other and with the Hamdeok family, the Furey executive board made the decision – THIS is our new family. On February 20, 2014, Jeju Furey acting president Mary Summers and Furey team members Yumi Kang and Niina Sakaki took another trip to visit the Hamdeok family. Unaware of the decision that had been made, the Hamdeok family was expecting just another visit so the Furey team could get more information.

However, the mother was quite surprised when the three Furey members, accompanied by some very special guests, arrived at her house and told her that Jeju Furey had made the decision to start supporting them. In our first visit with the family, the mother was very strong; keeping her emotions tucked away. Yet, when she heard the news, the tears welled up in her eyes.

What happened next was almost beyond words. Our special guests were 7 students from various Jeju high schools. These students, along with a few others who were unable to attend the family visit, got together back in the summer of 2013 and decided they wanted to do something to help out people in-need in Jeju. They designed bracelets that say “Just Enjoy Just 4 U” (spelling out JEJU) and were able to get them made. Their goal was to sell the bracelets and then give the money to people in-need in Jeju. Over the following six months, the students worked hard to sell as many bracelets as they could and ultimately ended up raising 1,000,000krw! Once they had sold these bracelets, though, they were unsure of where to turn. Through word of mouth, they heard about Jeju Furey and came to us seeking advice on how to get this money to families in need. Since Furey was in the works of finding a new family in the Hamdeok area, we offered the opportunity to join us when we visited the new family and they could deliver the money they raised to a family very much in need.

On the way to the family, it became clear that the students had lifestyles that were very separated from what they were about to get engaged in. With most of them being seniors, they were preparing for college and many had not had exposure to, or even heard about, the difficulties that some families faced. When they were told that the Hamdeok family’s middle son was unable to apply for college because the family could not afford the application fees, the students were shocked, but the world they were hearing about was so far separated that it didn’t truly sink in what they were about to do.

After the Hamdeok mother learned the news that Jeju Furey had made their decision to support them, she was told that these students also had something to tell her. One of the boys described the fundraising that the students had done with the bracelets and said that they wanted to give her the money that was raised. It was then that the mother’s walls came crashing down. The tears poured as she stood there in disbelief. After giving her the money the students had raised as well as some household gifts from Jeju Furey, the mother could not control her emotions. Saying endless “thank yous” and even running into the house to try to find something to offer us in gratitude – some chocolate cookies. The mother then expressed how grateful she was and in turn hugged and thanked each of the Furey team members and students.

For acting-president Mary Summers it was quite the experience.  “I’ve been moved by every family visit I’ve done, but nothing like this,” she said, “I didn’t know what moved me more – the mother’s reaction or the students’.”  For the students it was a very eye-opening and a moving experience. One student, on the walk back, said, “My heart is so warm.” In addition to the special interaction between the mother and the students, Mary also watched the special moment between the mother and Furey team member Niina Sakaki.  Niina, who had been studying at Jeju National University, will leave Jeju on Saturday, February 22nd (two days later) to return to Japan.  Since her arrival on Jeju she has been active in Jeju Furey events and the fact that she got to have this as one of her last Jeju and Jeju Furey experiences was very touching to see.

Therefore, it is with a special sort of joy and happiness that we introduce this Hamdeok family as our newest beneficiaries. As with Furey’s current beneficiary family in Iho (이호) and No’hyeong (노형), our mission is to help this Hamdeok (함덕) family out of poverty and to a reasonable standard of living.

That said, it is Furey policy to allow the beneficiary to choose how best to use the funds raised for them, and as the grandmother at Iho has shown, things can be done very well without our interference. So we ask the Furey community, both in Korea and abroad, to welcome the Hamdeok family into your thoughts and prayers.

We now want everyone to join in a round of applause for all our participants, volunteers, sponsors, and spectators whose contributions made this addition to the organization possible. We hope you that you will continue to support our events and encourage others to do the same, be it as a player, volunteer, or spectator. That support is the best way to help all of the Furey beneficiaries. We realize, however, that it is our role to make those events worthwhile participating in, and we continue to strive to improve each and every one of them; making it easier for everyone to have good times for a great cause.
